Unit One – Spare the rod

教学目标

1.       Grasp the main idea and the structure of the text;

2.       Master the key language points and grammatical structures in the text;

3.       Acquire the usage of prepositions.

教学基本内容设计

This unit discusses different ideas about discipline in schools by looking at the context of the “free” school of Summerhill where the students make the rules. The unit relates discipline to learning and motivation.

Reading: A School with No Rules!

Ÿ      Text Structure:

a) Read the text very quickly once to get a general understanding of the content. Look more carefully at the title and any subheadings.

b) Read the first sentence of each paragraph as this usually contains the main point of a paragraph. Carefully read the first and last paragraphs as these often tell you why the text was written.

c) Read through the text again, this time more carefully. Don't worry too much about any vocabulary you don't fully understand. Try to understand the content of the text as a whole. After reading each paragraph, quickly try to summarize the main points in your mind so you can follow the text more easily.

Ÿ           Exercises:

a)        Do the reading comprehension exercises in Part A.

b)        Tell the differences between traditional schooling and Summerhill School.

c)        Give the other forms of the words given in “Working with words” and then use them to make up sentences.

Ÿ           Working with language:

a)      Give a brief introduction of the usage of preposition.

b)      Examine the examples in the reading text.

c)      Pay attention to the three types of preposition errors.

d)      Do the exercises on the textbook and additional ones.
